Remembering Howard Lord, Seagoing Cowboy

We’re saddened to share news of the death of Seagoing Cowboy Howard Lord, who died this week at the age of 92. Lord set sail for Greece and Ethiopia in 1947 to deliver livestock to hungry families. In the video below, recorded in 2014, Lord remembers a trip that he said changed the course of his life.

Heifer International was launched by young men like Lord, who braved the oceans to offer sustenance, friendship and hope to people suffering in the aftermath of World War II.

In the second half of the 1940s and for many years following, a group of young farmers volunteered to accompany shipments of livestock to communities decimated by the Second World War. Howard Lord was on the SS Rock Springs Victory trip to Ethiopia in March 1947. This trip with United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration took UNRRA heifers and a few other animals to Greece and 248 Heifer project animals to Ethiopia.
