African Pig Farmers Reap Benefits of Growing Market

Since 2006, the demand for pig products has continued to grow worldwide. Heifer South Africa continues to help small-scale farmers enjoy the benefits of the growing pork market.

African Goat Auction a First for Small Farmers

Heifer South Africa attended a goat auction March 7, 2013, at Msinga in KwaZulu-Natal. The auction, run by AAM livestock agents and auctioneers with the Mdukatshani Rural Development Programme (MRDP), was one of the first indigenous goat auctions in the country and the first time in KwaZulu-Natal that local, smallholder, indigenous goat farmers had the opportunity to sell their livestock through a formal and fair auction process.

Canadian International Development Agency Extends Heifer South Africa Grant

In 2012, Heifer South Africa was awarded a grant for about $60,674 by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to develop its staff through several learning exchanges and training courses. CIDA was pleased with Heifer South Africa's successful activities and approved an additional $33,408 for 2013, to further capacity building activities.

Heifer South Africa Working With Researchers To Understand Rural Economic Networks

Heifer South Africa represented Heifer International at a workshop that introduced new research that will explore how economic networks function in rural communities in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Such a deep understanding of the broader rural economic context will make it possible to determine how and where interventions like Heifer’s could have the greatest impact.

Ntombizethu’s Garden

Through Heifer South Africa’s Sukuma Poultry Project, Ntombizethu Mhlakwana, 48, is using the resources available in her local community, including those resources provided by government, to improve her own life and that of her family.

Training for Nosipho’s Whole Family

Nosipho Ntanjana lives with her husband Sonwabile Ntanjana, their 13-year-old twin sons Sanele and Sandiso, and Nosipho’s brother Sonwabiso in Horeni village in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Both unemployed, Nosipho and her Sonwabile have struggled for many years to support their sons on the limited child support grant they receive every month. While Sonwabile was able to supplement the grant with various part-time jobs, it was still not enough to ensure a stable future. Since joining the Siphenathi Project at the beginning of 2012, Nosipho has been able to acquire skills and knowledge to provide a better future for herself and her family.

September 8 is International Literacy Day. Established in the 1960s by UNESCO, International Literacy Day is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of literacy among both children and adults, and the benefits those skills have in our future.
