A New Chapter for Fred and Florence in Uganda
Fred and Florence from Coo Pe, Uganda, met in a displacement camp, where they'd both fled to avoid being captured by rebels during Uganda's civil war. Both had lost family members, and Fred was even recovering from being shot himself. With no land, resources or employment in the camp, caring for their young children was nearly impossible. When peace talks began in 2006 they were among the first to leave the camp. The family moved back to Fred's parents land, but had to completely restart the farm.

Florence Yotamu is the chairperson of Twalumba Women's Draft Cattle Project and has been divorced since 1996. She says her husband abandoned her with three sons for an educated woman. Farming was the option she turned to in order to support herself and her three children. On rented land, she could not even produce enough grain to last the year. "My family survived like that until Heifer International introduced draft animals and training."

At a Heifer International “Passing of the Gift” ceremony that took place outside Kigali, Rwanda, one-hundred fifty farmers, officials and celebratory dancers took part in the joyous occasion to mark the “passing on” gift of a dairy cow from 22 Heifer donors to 22 recipients. The donors were themselves recipients of a Heifer International gift of livestock, and were fulfilling their commitment to give their cow’s first-born female to another needy recipient. The donations represented the sixth generation of giving for the vibrant, successful Heifer dairy cow project in Jabana, beginning with 172 animals in 2004, almost doubling in size to 321 cows in 2009. .

Dairy Developments for Small Farmers in Africa

Through a generous gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Heifer is working through the East African Dairy Development (EADD) to empower 179,000 dairy farmers double their milk production and develop refrigeration cooperatives so that the farmers can get more milk to market.
