From the Field

Heifer Philippines project participants took part in three learning visits to development cooperatives. Those attending gained experience in smallholder farming, dairy production and animal husbandry.
In partnership with Syngenta Foundation and UAP Insurance, East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) launched a new animal insurance in Tanykina Dairy Plant in Kipkaren Nandi County in the North Rift of Kenya. With the newly introduced Kilimo Salama livestock insurance, 32 pioneer EADD farmers can hedge their dairy businesses from common loss due to disease and malnutrition.
Aghvan learned how to prepare pastries from his mother, who is well known in her village for her skills. He received a seed grant from Heifer Armenia through the local YES! Youth Club and, at 12-years-old, has started his own small business. Read about it in his own words.
In 2012, Heifer South Africa was awarded a grant for about $60,674 by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to develop its staff through several learning exchanges and training courses. CIDA was pleased with Heifer South Africa's successful activities and approved an additional $33,408 for 2013, to further capacity building activities.
CARMAC is a unique Heifer project that will bring systemic change. Support for the 55 engaged cooperatives in terms of the 30 percent cost-share for acquiring agricultural equipment is, by itself, innovative. The project is of significant importance to the rural communities of Armenia, as it promotes more effective use of existing natural and technical resources and cultivates a sense of responsibility and private ownership among farmers.
