From the Field

Heifer Vietnam volunteer Maria Wrabel shares the stories of Heifer Vietnam project participants as they experience their first Passing on the Gift® ceremony.
Vietnam’s total national meat production in 2011 only met about 54 percent of the domestic market demand. Beef production in the Mekong Delta area studied accounted for just seven percent of the country’s production. There is great opportunity for beef cattle production in the Mekong Delta, specifically, and the whole country of Vietnam, in general. This workshop brought project partners and other stakeholders together to discuss the issues and work on a plan to improve the beef value chain.
Heifer Georgia recently celebrated the opening of the Community Based Agricultural Machinery Service Providing Center. The new center procured a 110 horsepower tractor, seven agricultural machines, a hangar to house the machines and an office building with the support of the government of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Program.
Project participants in this Bangladesh community were happy and proud to see the bricks, cement bags and other construction materials for building rings and slabs for sanitary pit latrines, which they made possible. They have come a long way since starting their self-help groups, fighting against poverty, utter negligence and other obstacles, proving that they, too, can contribute to society.
Heifer Nepal Country Director Shubh Mahato attended the Agricultural Development Strategy (ADS) Action Plan and Roadmap national workshop organized by the Ministry of Agriculture Development on March 24, 2013. With this action plan, Heifer has had an excellent opportunity to raise its advocacy issues on a national level. Heifer has been working to create enabling environments in which to grow smallholder farmers, especially women farmers, with a goal of promoting the stake of farmers at a national policy-making level for sustainable development of the agriculture sector, which results in increased incomes of farmers and improved food security.
