How You Can Give Back to Moms in Need (and Make a Difference This Mother's Day!)
This Sunday, while some moms will be opening presents and enjoying brunch with their families, other mothers all over the world will be struggling -- whether it's to make ends meet, to get proper maternal care or to feed their children.
This Mother's Day, in addition to honoring your own mom, we have five ways for you to make a difference in the life of a mom in need. These are all great gift ideas, too -- what better way to show your own mama that she raised your right than to help out another mother in name?
Heifer International - Has your mom been wanting you to give her a kid? Give her one! A kid goat in her honor, that is. A charitable donation to Heifer International provides a gift of livestock (like a goat or a flock of geese), or another useful item like a fruit tree or a hive of honey bees -- all of which help moms in need around the world reach lives of dignity and self-reliance. Pictured above is Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon, a longtime supporter of Heifer International, along with her own daughter Eva Amurri Martino and Sok Soeun, member of the Women's Prosperity Group in Cambodia. After completing the checkout process, you'll have the opportunity to create a personalized card to tell your own mom how you have honored her. Heifer.org
CARE - "Help Her Live" by supporting CARE's Maternal Health Network. It's hard to imagine, but maternal mortality is nothing short of an epidemic -- according to CARE, one woman dies nearly every single minute of the day from complications during pregnancy or childbirth each year. CARE works directly with women and communities, empowering them with resources and information while creating policies to ensure that safe pregnancy and birth are basic human rights. They reached reach 41 million women, men and children in 2011 -- help them surpass that this year! CARE.org
Meals on Wheels - Can you imagine your own mom living all alone, with very limited resources, hardly any visitors, unsure of where her next meal might come from? It's pretty hard to think about, but the fact is that every year, Meals of Wheels serves millions of homebound senior citizens in that exact plight (a million every day, in fact). For every $7 you donate, Meals on Wheels can deliver a nourishing meal to a homebound mom, along with a card. There's also an option to send your own mom a card, which you can can personalize with a video or photo and message, as well as post a story about your mom in the public video gallery.
