Chores for Change

Chores for Change is a program that teaches students of any age about community service, the world and how to make a difference. Participants work as volunteers to reduce hunger, such as passing out food at a soup kitchen or collecting cans for a food bank. Each participant recruits sponsors to pledge donations for time spent in volunteer activities, collects the donations and sends them to Heifer International to help us fight world hunger. The experience of confronting hunger issues, firsthand, teaches lifelong lessons.

Teachers may choose to divide their class into groups led by student leaders or to set benchmarks and determine what their fundraising will support before introducing the program to the class. Information is also provided to guide teachers on program duration and keeping students motivated.

Heifer also provides information for parents, explaining the activity’s goal, reasons for engagement and permission slips. This information can be sent home with students.

Chores for Change is a part of the middle school lesson plans. You may order a hard copy online as part of the 7th and 8th grade lesson plans, by calling (800) 422-0474 or you can download a PDF version.
